Martin Freeman Joins the Cast of Captain America: Civil War

With production just underway on Captain America: Civil War, Marvel has revealed that Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock and Fargo) has joined the cast in an undisclosed role.

If you thought Avengers: Age of Ultron had a lot of characters, it seems that Captain America: Civil War is going to put that count to shame. Today a big new name was added to the cast list when Marvel officially announced that Martin Freeman had joined the film.

Freeman, whose role in the film has not yet been revealed, is a wonderful actor with a wide range of abilities and joins Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch in the MCU. Marvel Studios' President Kevin Feige said, "From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

I expect an official release about the beginning of production from Marvel Studios in the coming days and that may shed more light on the role, but my first instinct was that Freeman might be playing Avengers' government liaison Henry Peter Gyrich. I'm certain that he'll have an entirely different role, but he'd be perfect for the role of Gyrich.
