RUMOR: Marvel and Netflix Developing The Punisher

A rumor from a new name to the CBM blogging scene suggests that, in the wake of the hugely successful Daredevil, Marvel and Netflix have begun development of a second set of series and that fan favorite anti-hero Frank Castle will be a part of it.

Earlier this week, The Vigilantist published an unconfirmed rumor that suggested Marvel and Netflix were now into development of "Phase 2" of their MCU-based series and that chief among the new titles was The Punisher.

Now, The Vigilantist is a new name and has had no track record of success, but based on an off-the-record conversation with the site's owner, I do believe he is on to something and that we will be getting further confirmation of this news in the near future.

The author of the rumor also tweeted that Moon Knight was another of the series being developed, but gave no further descriptions of his knowledge of the plans for Netflix and Marvel.

While it's unclear how many series are being developed or when they'll air, it should please some of the more hard edge Marvelites, like myself, that two of Marvel's most violent anti-heroes might be headed to Netflix in the near future. I know a lot of people imagine that these series will be years away, but at this point in time, there's no way to tell just when Marvel will move forward. It seems they are comfortable shooting the second season of Daredevil concurrently with the first season of Luke Cage and airing them in a relatively short span of time, so it's not out of the realm of possibilities that The Punisher could begin production sometime in the next two years. There's been a awful lot of talking and hinting and rumoring (even by Daredevil show runner Steven DeKnight) about Frank Castle getting his own series or even making his debut in Daredevil, so things are likely a lot further down the line than we know.

While it's a certainty that The Punisher and Moon Knight aren't the only two series in development, it's hard to determine what other properties Marvel might have thrown Netflix's way. I'd love to see Shang Chi, Man-Thing, Blade, Morbius, Cloak and Dagger, White Tiger, Runaways, Avengers Academy, Young Avengers or even something like Nextwave end up getting series at some point. Some of those properties have been under development in the past and could certainly turn up.

I'm confident that this will be confirmed or denied in the near future and we'll have more to discuss then!
