As promised, JJ Abrams released a teaser trailer today for Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which doesn't hit theaters until December of 2015. Check it out after the jump.
Apparently that's Andy Serkis providing the voice over for the teaser and I think it's quite a good "teaser" indeed. I like that it shows us a couple of important new characters, John Boyega's Stormtrooper:
and Daisy Ridley's character without revealing much of who they are or what role they'll play in the story.
Then we get the bad guy shot, possibly a new Sith of some sort, but definitely a bad ass shot of his new, very dangerous looking light saber:
And from there, I absolutely love what Abrams and company put together. The rest of the trailer allows for a lot of nostalgia despite it being all new stuff. The X-Wings and the Falcon really bring some good feelings to older fans like me, but we never see Luke or Han or any of the old cast. I thought the final shots of the Falcon first flying high and then engaging with Tie Fighters in the desert were incredibly cool and nostalgia-y while showing something entirely different: the Falcon engaging in a battle that isn't taking place in space. Think about it...we've seen X-Wing and Falcon action before, but we've never seen them engaging in battles on the surface of planets. I mean the original Star Wars films were cool because the fights took place IN SPACE. This to me is one of the cooler touches Abrams placed in the film, much like having the Enterprise underwater in Star Trek.
At the end of the day, this teaser put an older fan like me in a very good mood with its mix of nostalgia and the kind of cool, new touches that Abrams is good for.
