Marvel Begins Its Search for Jessica Jones and Luke Cage

According to Deadline, Marvel is beginning to cast its net in hopes of finding their Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.

Marvel's deal with Netflix to produce 4 character-driven series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage) ahead of a Defenders team-up series was a bold step in a new direction for Marvel TV. The first of the series, Daredevil, is now in production with a yet unspecified 2015 release date and now, it seems, Marvel is pre-production on Jessica Jones, which will follow Daredevil.

According to Deadline, Marvel is lining up actresses for the role of Jessica Jones, a super-powered heroine who gave up the life of a superhero before becoming opening her own detective agency. The report says Jessica De Gouw (Arrow's Huntress), Alexandra Daddario (True Detective), Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) and Marin Ireland (Side Effects, I Am Legend) are among the actresses Marvel would like to test for the role.

The report says Marvel is testing for the role of Luke Cage as well. Given the relationship between Cage and Jones in the comics, I have expected that they'd both play a part in each other's series and Deadline is reporting that it's expected the actor who lands the role of Cage will appear in 6 or 7 of the 13 episodes of Jessica Jones, while the Luke Cage series is lined up to be the final project before The Defenders, Marvel needs to find themselves an actor relatively quickly. To that end, they are looking at up and comer Cleo Anthony (apparently he was in Divergent, Mike Colter (The Following) and Lance Gross (Crisis) for the role of Cage.

Honestly all of the actresses are too pretty for Jessica Jones, but Daddario's role in True Detective makes her an intriguing choice. I'm unfamiliar with all of the men on the list, but on appearances alone, Cleo Anthony would make a damn good Luke Cage.

Stay tuned as this story continues to develop as new names are added to the list. It's an exciting time for Marvel TV as we build towards what promises to be a very cool Defenders mini-series!
