Doctor Strange FINALLY Gets an Official Release Date

After months of speculation, Marvel has set a date for Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange.

Screen Daily has broken the news that Marvel is in negotiations to begin filming Doctor Strange at Pinewood-Shepperton Studios in May of 2015 ahead of a July 8, 2016 release.

While there's been no casting yet for the film, one can assume that if the studio has set a release date, they likely have someone in mind for the Sorcerer Supreme and that he has an opening on his schedule this coming spring. This has long been thought to be the date for the Doctor Strange film, but this is the first time we've had any mention of a shooting schedule. Interestingly, if things stay on this schedule, Marvel will have to films in production simultaneously as the third entry in the Captain America franchise is set to go before the camera at Atlanta's Pinewood Studios in April. I'd expect casting news for both films, along with some title cards to be in the not-to-distant future given Marvel's track record for such things.

Marvel's tentative Phase 3 lineup is now:

Ant-Man, July 17, 2015
Captain America 3, May 6, 2016
Doctor Strange, July 8, 2016
Untitled Phase 3 Film, May 5, 2017 (long-thought to be Thor 3)
Guardians of the Galaxy 2, July 28, 2017
Untitled Phase 3 Film, November 3, 2017
Untitled Phase 3 Film, May 4 2018 (thought to be Avengers 3)

At this point it remains unclear whether any of the announced dates beyond May 4, 2018 will be a part of Marvel's Phase 3 or if they belong to Phase 4, thought it's likely that Phase 3 will end with the third Avengers' film.
