Just a few days after casting Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon, Fox has added 4 more members to the cast of its upcoming show, Gotham.
Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara and Erin Richards have been announced as additions to the cast of Gotham today, according to Variety.
Sean Pertwee (Elementary, Event Horizon) will take on the instrumental role of Alfred Pennyworth, the loyal butler of the Wayne family, famously tasked with raising an orphaned Bruce. Variety reports that Pertwee's Alfred will be a "tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London." While this doesn't jive with most people's memories of Alfred, there is certainly some precedent from the comics of an Alfred that is not afraid to mix it up and even spar with Master Bruce. The role of Alfred is obviously going to be instrumental to the series. It's Alfred who will be the primary caretaker for Bruce and help shape him into the man who will become Batman, which is rumored to be the eventual goal of the show.
Robin Lord Taylor, who had a short stint as Sam on The Walking Dead this season, has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot, the man who will become the classic Batman villain, The Penquin. Gotham's Penquin is described by Variety as having "the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal..." Cobblepot is set to start off as "a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney" who "hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor." That certainly seems an appropriate rundown of The Penquin and while Taylor is not a well-known face, he's certainly a unique one. One thing Gotham has going for it is it's willingness to grow the villains of Gotham alongside its hero.
