Evangeline Lilly to Join the MCU as Female Lead in Ant-Man
Actress Evangeline Lilly as entered into talks to join the MCU as the female lead in 2015's Ant-Man.
The cast of Edgar Wright's Ant-Man has started to come together ahead of a spring start to production. Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas have been officially announced as members of the cast with Michael Pena rumored to be on board as one of the film's villains. While it was long rumored that Rashida Jones was the favorite to land the unnamed female lead in the film, it nows seems that Evangeline Lilly ( Lost, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) is set to join the cast, according to Variety.
The role for which the 34-year old Canadian-born Lilly is in negotiations is still unannounced, but it is known that her deal will add her to the MCU for more than one film, leading all observers to the conclusion that Lilly will be taking on the role of Janet van Dyne, aka The Wasp. Just how Janet is going to fit into the mix in Wright's version of Ant-Man is of great interest as current rumors her playing the daughter of Douglas's Pym and being involved with Paul Rudd's Scott Lang.
Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish (who should be directing a Marvel film himself at some point) have really worked hard to make sure Ant-Man fits into the existing MCU and have made quite a few changes and this is one that I'm quite curious about. As a long-time Marvel fan, it's hard to imagine Hank and Jan co-existing in the cinematic universe with an entirely different dynamic than the one from the comics; however, at this point it's certainly not worth worrying about as we have NO idea what's going to play out. Either way it does, I'm a HUGE fan of Lilly and look forward to her work in the MCU, though at this point I'm struggling to imagine how the logistics will play out. I do, however, trust Edgar Wright as I've personally enjoyed all of his work.
