Sony Announces 'Venom' and 'Sinister Six' Films to Begin the Expansion of Their Spider-Verse

Sony Pictures Entertainment sent out a press release late last night, via their Electro Arrives website, announcing the return of Marc Webb to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in addition to films for Venom and The Sinister Six.

While details were sparse and most of the press release was just fluff, we did get some information about the teams developing and directing the films. Sony has put together a creative team of Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Marc Webb, Drew Goddard, Jeff Pinkner and Ed Solomon to expand their Spider-Man cinematic universe. Kurtzman will direct the Venom feature film and Goddard, who was recently hired by Marvel to direct their Daredevil Netflix series, will write and, presumably, direct The Sinister Six film. One of those two films will likely take the May 4, 2018 slot reserved by Sony.

At this point all I can say is I'm going to wait and see. A Venom film has potential, but maybe less now that Kurtzman and Orci are attached. Anything that Drew Goddard is working on is going to get my full attention; however, I'm curious just how a film about 6 villains is going to be put together.  Speculation is that Goddard's Sinister Six film will be the first up but there's nothing solid with which to back that at the moment.

What are your thoughts on this big news? Is Sony setting trends, or setting themselves up for failure by making films about villains?
