The Daily Superhero reported a rumor earlier today that got me thinking...according to the same source that alerted them to Bradley Cooper being on Marvel's radar, the studio is apparently eager to come to an agreement with Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to star in an unknown role. To be clear, this is A RUMOR and it is not the first time Cumberbatch's name has been brought up in regards to a role with Marvel. Having said that, I'm willing to take a look at 5 characters that might be right for Cumberbatch...after the jump.
Maximus the Mad, The Inhumans
I'll jump right in with the role which Cumberbatch should be playing: Maximus the Mad of the Inhumans. Maximus is the brother of Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans, and the two have a long and twisted history that involves sibling rivalry, the death of their parents and a number of grand schemes. While Maximus has always wanted the throne and his motives are always in question, he has saved the Inhumans and served his brother well on a number of occasions.
Depending on how the inevitable Inhumans film plays out, Maximus is arguably the film's second lead, which gives Cumberbatch a lot to do without giving him too much to do. While he can easily be portrayed as a villain, his would be a deep and multi-faceted character, especially if the Inhumans are meant to be another franchise in Marvel's MCU and not just a one off.
With Marvel going Cosmic and headed down the road to the Infinity Gauntlet story line, Adam Warlock is a very likely candidate to be added to the MCU roster of good guys sometime soon. Warlock's character is very enigmatic and can come off a bit odd sometimes...sounds like something Cumberbatch can pull of, yeah?
We've seen Warlock's protective cocoon in both Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. If we are to see Warlock in the MCU, he'll likely have a connection to the Soul Gem, as he has in the comics, and will be a key ally of The Avengers in their fight against Thanos.
This seems to be the most popular role for Cumberbatch to land among fans, however, I much prefer the rumor that has Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. Not that Cumberbatch couldn't be a wonderful Stephen Strange...I'm sure he'd do a great job. However, the studio is reportedly looking at the role of Doctor Strange as their lead dog for the next couple of phases and I feel a little more confident that JGL can carry a film, or several, than Cumberbatch.
It seems that the role of Stephen Strange will, in fact, belong to Benedict Cumberbatch.
Speaking of Doctor Strange...
If Cumberbatch is on the radar for a Doctor Strange film, I'd much rather see him in the villainous role of Baron Mordo. Mordo was once the right-hand man to the Ancient One, but when his plot to off the old guy was uncovered by Strange, things didn't go his way. Though both Strange and Mordo are masters of magic, they certainly employ it differently and I could see Cumberbatch being a master of mesmerism and tossing around some black magic. I repeat, if he's going to be a part of this film, I certainly think Mordo is the right part for him.
Sleeper pick here. I really want to see the Vision (if you're not familiar, you can learn much more about him here) on the big screen. His powers would be visually stunning on screen and given the fact that he's a character that continues to evolve in the pages of the comics, he could be around for a long time and not become a boring character. I can almost hear Cumberbatch delivering the Vision's lines in my head and I think it would be pretty spot on; however, it's no given that the character is ever going to be in the MCU. However, as many of us had long hoped, Paul Bettany is going to portray Vision!
It is what it is guys...it's brain splatter...it's me thinking about a rumor. What are your thoughts about Cumberbatch and where he fits in the MCU, if at all?
