Today's first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier not only looked outstanding, but also gave us some ideas as to where things may be heading in the MCU, especially with S.H.I.E.L.D. Safe to say things are going to change and a lot of things about the organization's past are may be revealed. It also seems that Cap, Widow and newcomer, Falcon, will be facing a threat from inside S.H.I.E.L.D. while trying to deal with the mysterious Winter Soldier. After the jump I'll run through a few talking points with some screenshots from the trailer, which you can view just below:
Crossbones and Cap Are Working Together at Some Point
The first scene in the trailer ends with Cap jumping out of the plane, chute free, as two other men watch. The guy on the right in the picture above is actor Frank Grillo who is playing Marvel villain Crossbones in the film. So, why is Crossbones on the same flight with Cap and seemingly working together? I believe that answer lies in the next screenshot
Alexander Pierce Is A Weasel
Cap works for an espionage agency; he is surrounded by liars who get to be called spies and lie professionally. It's clear, in this trailer, that there are shady things going on within S.H.I.E.L.D. and we can be pretty sure Pierce, played by legendary actor Robert Redford, is right at the center of them. Nick Fury clearly warns Cap but how can Cap trust Fury after what went down in The Avengers? It seems, at this point, that Crossbones may be a part of a team Pierce has put together and once Cap and crew figure out that Pierce isn't all he's cracked up to be, Pierce will sick Crossbones on Cap. Speaking of that...
Speaking of Fury...
Looks like THE SPY is the target of the Winter Soldier's initial attack. With Fury out of the picture recovering in the hospital, Pierce will likely take the reigns of S.H.I.E.L.D. and have Cap at his disposal. It makes one think that maybe, just maybe, Pierce sent the Winter Soldier out after Fury...
Cap Kicks Ass in an Elevator
One can assume that not long after Cap discovers that Pierce isn't on the up and up, Pierce will try to take him out. Of course a bunch of guys in an elevator is the best way to do something like that. You may recognize the guys in front of and to Cap's right from the first screen grab. This will probably be the turning point of the film and lead into the third act.
Cap Switches Uniforms
Towards the end of the trailer we see Cap back in his 40s era costume which means we are likely to have some flashbacks. This isn't entirely unexpected as I believe the SSR and the history of S.H.I.E.L.D. will have a role in the events of the film. If not flashbacks, then I guess Rogers decided to wear what he felt cozy in...if only there were some place where Steve could get his old outfit.
The Winter Soldier is a Bad Ass
I know you're probably expecting me to say something...but I'm not gonna...just look.
Sam Wilson Will Fly as The Falcon
We knew this to be the case but it was certainly a very cool part of the trailer. The "wings" look more like a glider than anything but let's face it, the comic book look was NOT going to translate here.
The rest of the trailer had some pretty great moments including the Hellicarrier going DOWN. This film has an entirely different feel from the original Captain America film and from pretty much every other Marvel film which is clearly what Kevin Feige and the studio heads want. I know it was just a 2:28 trailer but it certainly seems that this film could easily be one of the studio's best efforts.
