What's New on DVD and Blu, Episode 3: The Blu-Ray Rises

Here's my 3rd look at what's new in the world of DVD/Blu-Ray and what's next!

What's New:

Now You See Me [Blu-ray]

Someone had the good sense to reunite Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson in this film about illusionist who pull off some Robin Hood type heists.  Mark Ruffalo is the FBI guy on their case.  This didn't get the reviews I thought it would but it's not a bad flick at all and it has a few chuckles.

Empire State [Blu-ray]

Dwayne Johnson, who puts out a new movie every week, and Liam Hemsworth (ya know, Thor's brother...no, not Loki...he's the brother of the guy who plays Thor!) headline a little diddy about two buddies who want to jack an armored car depository and the gigantic cop who will kick their faces in.  Obviously wasn't a high profile film, but it does have the Rock so it's worth one viewing for me!

Sharknado [Blu-ray]

This is clearly the reason not a lot of other bigger titles were set for release on 9/03...the companies knew that 99% of the money spent on DVD/Blu this week would be spent on Sharknado.  Now you can own the movie that redefined ridiculous.  My favorite thing about this movie was that it ended but my kids loved it and they actually worked together to name the sequel and even came up with a plot: Sharknado 2: Electric Boogaloo...The Sharkcano...the original sharknado dropped some sharks into a volcano but instead of dying the sharks survived and, when the volcano erupts, the sharks are set free...SPITTING LAVA!!  This is genius and must be done!

Spartacus: War of the Damned - The Complete Third Season [Blu-ray]

The third and final season of Spartacus was a great one.  These shows are super formulaic but it's a good formula: one part hyper-violent with one-part lots of naked people.  Seems to work.  I love the Spartacus story...it's a great legend and it's inspired a lot of other work.  The Planet Hulk story line is a Spartacus story dressed up in outer space with a green monster.  Good show...going to be missed.

What's Next:

The week of September 10 sees the release of: Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy), which is already available for digital download and that's about all that's worthwhile which means that next week I'll be talking a lot about Star Trek Into Darkness!
