Ant-Man Closes in on Becoming Reality; Expect Many Announcements Soon

The Ant-Man movie has been rumored to be on its way for longer than my children have been alive.  Its been a divisive topic among fans with many believing it will fail and that not even Marvel Studios brand awareness and credibility will save it.  I've long fallen on the other side of the debate and the announcement that the film would be made by Edgar Wright only served to increase my sense of security and my anticipation as Wright is by far one of my favorite directors.  Whatever side of the argument you fall on, the film is happening, finally, and the gears are about to officially begin grinding on the project.

Pre-production is slated to begin in October (that's tomorrow to you and me kids) with shooting to begin in 2014. With the release date being moved up to July 31, 2015 to avoid conflict with Bond 24, one would assume that they'd like to start that filming by mid-2014 and that means they have to have a cast in place.  Having just moved up the release date, I'm confident that the powers at Marvel have their duckies and bunnies in rows and, I would expect, will be making some announcements in the near future concerning the roles of Hank Pym (Ant-Man) and Janet van Dyne (Wasp) and, possibly, the potential villain of the film.  With the arrival of Thor: The Dark World in theaters in just over a month it is not out of the ordinary for a studio like Marvel to get their name out in the media for announcements like this to capitalize on the attention.

Marvel has typically been filming about 12-13 months ahead of release.  They typically have their leads in place ahead of the rest of the cast, though recently they've just been recycling leads, and fill out the cast 1-2 months ahead of shooting.  For comparisons sake, Chris Pratt was tabbed as Star-Lord in early February, a full 5 months ahead of the beginning of filming for Guardians of the Galaxy which will be in theaters next August. Iron Man 3 began filming May 23, 2012 ahead of the May 3, 2013 release.  Ben Kingsley was rumored to be in talks for the film on April 9, 2012...a month-plus ahead of filming. Thor: The Dark World began filming early in September 2012; Christoper Eccleston was reported to be in talks for Malekith on August 1, 2012.    Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the cast of which is almost exclusively composed of returning members (the big exception being Anthony Mackie, who was cast as Falcon mid-July of 2012)began filming in April of this year and is set to be released April 4, 2014. And Avengers: Age of Ultron, the biggest film of Phase 2, which opens just about 3 months before Ant-Man is slated to begin production in March of 2014. Sooooo...I expect the leads to be cast relatively quickly, then have script reads with candidates to fill out the rest of the cast and filming to start  no later than June of 2014, which would give us fans a nice look at some footage for Comic-Con 2014.

The point is that we are getting close to seeing this long-awaited film get underway and it's very exciting.  It's been pretty under wraps til this point but, casting announcements will help us get a feel (will there just be Pym or will we have Scott Lang as well?)

Hollywoodreporter.com is the place to keep an eye on as they typically are the first to report this kind of thing officially...I'll do that for you so you can come here and get the news as soon as it exists.
